John Forrest

John Forrest was a famous Western Australia explorer who was born in 1847. One of John Forrest's big achievements was that he was chosen to lead the expedition to find the famous mkissing German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. His expedition set off on the 15th April 1869 from Perth and Tooday. On 17th April the party consisted of 6 men, 16 horses several dogs and had enough supplies to last them 720 kilometres to Esprence. her they planned to meet a boat to obtain fresh supplies on this journey water was always a problem the horses were in poor condition and the men were. They were away from civilization for 113 days. During that time they travelled over thirty-two thousand kilometres of uncharted and unknown wilderness.
The next year he surveyed the coastal route from Perth to Adelaide. John Eyre crossed here in 1840-1841 but this was the first crossing of the area from west to east. Alexander Forrest, his brother, was second in command across the Nullabor. Another one of John Forrest's big achievements was that he was the person who told the government where the land was to put the telephones lines out to connect to London from Australia. His important expedition was in 1879 when with a government advance of 800 Pounds (1600 dollars) when he found and named the Kimberley district.
In 1871 he sought grazing land on the Hampton Plains. At the age of 41 he became Western Australia's first Premier John Forrest had 8 brothers but only 6 of his 8 brothers accompanied and helped him. Back in Western Australia he was given a free grant of 2000 hectares of free land in 1876. John Forrest's explorations were mostly know for finding farmland.
Little was known about the centre of Australia even though much of the rest of Australia had been explored part of the interior had been explored by Warburton, Giles and Gosse reported it as dry desolate land. In 1874, Forrest set off to travel from Western Australia to the centre of Australia. This expedition had 6 men, 20 horses and enough food to last them 8 months. John Forrest took with him his brother and Tommy Windich.
John Forrest led three expeditions to the center of Australia. They left Garlton heading for Murchison River. Every day John or his brother would look for a waterhole as their horses needed water every twelve hours. At that time John knew he should have got camels instead of horses because camels can go without water for 10 to 12 days.On June The second we reached Weld Springs.

After leaving Weld Springs, the group climbed high mountains overlooking the Gibson desert. While climbing a tree to look around, Forrest saw a war party of 40 to 60 aborigines, armed with spears and shields. The aboriginal party ran towards the explorers yelling and shouting with their spears ready. When they were 30 metres away, Forrest gave an order to fire. A native was badly wounded and the war party fled into the hills. It is thought that possibly the white men had camped on a sacred aboriginal ground. For protection they built a stone hut while they were looking around for water. By August the group was in trouble. They were about 1500 kilometres from the nearast settlement in Western Australia and they could not turn back because they wouldn't know if they would find water where they had previsouly found it before. But suddenly just then it started to rain which was very unfamiliar because it did't really rain at that point. On september 27 they reached the telegraph. Three days later they found the Telegraph station they were given food and clothing. From this point on their adventure they were able to send the news back to Adelaide and Perth on November 3rd they reached Adelaide and were given a big welcome.
Together with his brother Alexander they were the best known explorers in Western Australia. He was elected to the Fedral Government in 1901. John Forrest was Australia's first native born peer when he was named Barron Forrest in 1918.john_forrest.gif

Reflection
What made me proud was that when my dad came around to my presentation and he was really impressed, he so impressed that he said it was better then my two brothers. What made me wonder was the number of adults that came along because we only have about hundread children doing night of the notables but there was about 200 adults. Something that confused me was how every child was abe to finish their projects on time. Something I want to know more about is John Eyre as I didn't have enough time read that project because I had to go home. Something I learned from someone else was why Mary Reiby was on the twenty dollar note. Something I could probably change is my diorama, making it look different. Something that confused me was that there had been so many people on the five dollar note. Overall I thought the Night Of the Notables went really well and there was so many people dressed in costumes and also everyone had so much information!
